The global energy sector and climate system are closely interlinked with the energy sector producing the majority of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, electricity infrastructure and energy security are linked through variability in the weather, and are vulnerable to extreme weather driven by climate change. Australia’s prosperity this century depends on how the country manages its weather and energy interactions.

Alberto’s career spans several leading roles at institutions such as NASA, ECMWF (UK), the University of Reading (UK) and CSIRO (Australia). He is the chief editor and author of four books: Seasonal Climate: Forecasting and Managing Risk (2008), Management of Weather and Climate Risk in the Energy Industry (2009), Weather Matters for Energy (2014), and the popular Weather & Climate Services for the Energy Industry (2018).

Gilbert Brunet – Chief Scientist Bureau of Meteorology

Gilbert joined the Bureau in 2018 as Chief Scientist and Group Executive, Science and Innovation (SIG). As Chief Scientist, Gilbert promotes Science and Innovation within the Bureau and advocates the Bureau’s science and innovation to the wider community.Gilbert has been the Director of the Meteorological Research Division (MRD), Environment Canada (EC) between 2006-2018. Here Gilbert was seconded into the role of Director Weather Science at the Met Office United Kingdom, 2012-15.

Asif Bhangor — Engineer Design Manager AusNet Services

Asif has more than 23 years of experience in the power engineering sector providing technical solutions spanning environmental, planning, civil, structural and electrical design working across Asia Pacific including Australia/ New Zealand. Asif is the Convenor for the International Working Group on risk management of overhead power lines in extreme weather events.
