On the 8th October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC] Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C was approved by governments. It has since made global headlines, featuring on the front pages of the New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, ABC and The Guardian (amongst many others).

Ninety-one authors and review editors from 40 countries prepared the IPCC report in response to an invitation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) when it adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015. The report assesses global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty.

Come join us on Nov 1st to hear from five Western Australian scientists who contributed to this historic report:

Dr. Neville Ellis and Ms Karen Paiva Henrique(The University of Western Australia): Background to the IPCC Special Report 1.5°C

Dr. Jatin Kala (Murdoch University): What is 1.5°C and why do we care?

Prof. Peter Newman (Curtin University): 1.5°C: what is the world doing and what more can it do?

Prof. Petra Tschakert (The University of Western Australia): What does 1.5°C mean for people, sustainable development and poverty eradication?

The authors will discuss key findings and the implications for current and future generations. This will be followed by a Q&A session, as well as drinks and nibbles.

The event promises to be a landmark moment for the Western Australian science community.
